About Us
Chippewa Valley Sports Car Club (CVSCC) is an organization with over 60 years of history based in Western Wisconsin's Chippewa Valley. As a car club, CVSCC sponsors the Chippewa Valley Cars and Coffee, plus hosts and attends various auto related events, as well as a number of social events. Some past events include: road rally (timed distance), autocross, cruise & dine, car shows, ice races, pro kart racing, factory/business tours, socials etc. The club also tries to make a difference in the community by helping out with the Teen Car Control Class and donating a large portion of its proceeds to scholarships for CVTC's automotive students.
Any person having a genuine interest in sports cars and who will take an active part in the club is eligible for membership. Events are planned by volunteer club members, if there is something you are interested in, just make an effort to make it happen. Chances are that many other members will appreciate your efforts and participate.
Club members have a wide variety of cars, here is just a sampling of current vehicles in the 'CVSCC Garage': Mazda Miata (multiple), Ford Mustang (multiple), Alfa Romeo 4c (pair), Lotus Elise (pair), Lotus Esprit, Subaru WRX, Porsche 911, 1969 Camaro, 300ZX Twin Turbo, Infiniti G35, Cadillac CTS-V, Audi A6 Quattro, Vee, Honda S2000, Mini Cooper, and more!
Beginning
Just when it really began is hard to say. Somewhere back in the dim past when a couple of MG-TD drivers got together, or maybe in 1957 when the first rally was run out of Chippewa Falls, but the beginnings were slow and rather unorganized. It was not until 1960 after much urging from Jack Nozle that the club became organized and incorporated. Bill Bean, Bob Plunkett and Dick Feeney met at Bob's house in Chippewa one night in March and laid the groundwork for the first meeting to be held April 20th at the old Import Motors building on Hwy 93. They followed the Twin Cities Sports Car Club's format, using their by laws as a guide.
The meeting ran smoothly and there was a good turnout, most of who joined as Charter Members. Bob Plunkett presided until the first officers were elected. Donald A. Peterson, a former president of TCSCC, was elected president, and Bob Plunkett became the only vice-president to be elected. (The past president now becomes the V.P.) Bob's sister, Joany, was unanimously elected secretary, and Dick Feeney became the treasurer. A cordial atmosphere was completed with coffee and donuts, provided by Charly Lasker, and a good color movie on the races at Watkins Glen was shown.
The first event, held soon after, was a Hare and Hound rally and started from the fairgrounds in Chippewa Falls. Thirteen cars were entered.
A lot of fond memories remain of those good old days, such as the old "Alpha Centauri" booming thru the countryside on rallies; those early "round the houses" gymkhanas at Frederick and the "Arcadia Broiler Festival"; the first ice gymkhana on Altoona Lake with bare ice and a wide open course; Chuck Knutsen getting stuck on top of the ball in the ball rolling event at our own first gymkhana at Carson Park; the beginnings of the event that were then institutions such as the Alpine Rallye, Parker's Peak Hillclimb and the Northwoods Rally. And then of course every one had to make the semi-annual pilgrimages to Road America.
In 1980, due to the energy crunch, the double nickel speed limit, and government's attempts to regulate the automobile into a dull utility substitute for mass transit, the Chippewa Valley Sports Car Club became dormant.
Another twenty years had past when Dick Feeney met Jim McCarthy at B.K. Auto Show in the fall of 2000 and talked about revitalizing the club. Advertising was done in the paper for anyone interested in joining. Meetings started in January at O'Leary Pub in Eau Claire, WI. The club had officially been reborn in April 2001 and continues to this day as it evolves with the interests of members.
